The Essex Serpent

WHY

The new Apple TV+ series, The Essex Serpent, takes us to the Victorian period in search of a mythical creature. Based on the novel of the same name, we will follow the life of a young London widow who is interested in nature and science. Rumors of a mysterious beast in Essex will motivate her to leave London to discover the truth. The young woman will soon find herself confronted with the fears and superstitions of the inhabitants. The series highlights the huge gap between the society living in the cities and the countryside. On one side, the people are making big steps discoveries after discoveries and on the other the fears and superstitions are reinforced by the hard working conditions. This is further amplified by the conflicts between religion and science. The discussions between the heroine and the churchmen are very interesting. Another very interesting aspect is the London life of this time, we witness in particular the beginning of modern medicine. The main character (played by Claire Danes) is really fascinating, she is very progressive and overcomes the aftermath of her recently deceased violent husband. The complicity with Tom Hiddleston works very well. And the whole is sublimated by a magnificent cinematography! In spite of some length, we follow this investigation with a lot of interest!
