Spiderhead

WHY

Shortly after the release of Top Gun: Maverick (finished quite a while ago), director Joseph Kosinski is back with a new film on Netflix this time with this adaptation of the novel “Escape From Spiderhead” by George Saunders. On this occasion, he works again with Miles Teller and offers Chris Hemsworth to play something other than a superhero and it’s good to see him in another register. The story proposes us to follow prisoners who in exchange for benefits and relative freedom must be tested on drugs under the direction of Hemsworth. These drugs can control emotions and the results are quite impressive. Of course, things are going to get messy and show the drifts of this system. The gradual revelations about the inmates’ pasts work very well as does the impressive acting that has to move from one emotion to another without a break. The two thirds of the film are really interesting to follow, it’s just a bit of a pity that the finale is quickly dispatched and is a bit shaky. Fortunately the film doesn’t drag on and is pleasant to watch thanks to the very beautiful direction of the director as well as the cinematography and the interesting sets of the laboratory!
